  • It was giving Robert Cohn pleasure to know that Jake knew that there was an "understanding" there was "something between him and Brett."
  • Jake said that Bill and Jake would go up right after lunch
  • Robert Cohn said he wished he could go because they've been planning the trip all winter and as soon as he found Brett in Mike they'd be right up
  • After finding Bill shaving in his room, Jake learns that Robert had told Bill that he had a date with Brett in San Sebastian; Jake calls him a liar
  • Bill tells Jake not to get "sore" at this stage in the trip and if he had more Jewish friends he could bring along
  • Jake tells Bill that he has some "fine" friends too but Bill says that they don't compare to Robert Cohn and that Robert Cohn could be "damned nice"
  • Bill tells Jake not to laugh because Jake was not out with "awful" Robert until 2o'clock in the morning and Bill wanted to know what was going on with Brett and Robert Cohn from Jake
  • Jake says to Bill that Brett went down to San Sebastian with Robert Cohn because she couldn't go alone and that Brett said it would be good for Robert Cohn
  • Bill asked Jake why she didn't go with one of her people, Jake, or with Bill because he had face any woman would be safe with and Bill went on on about how safe his face was to Jake
  • Then Bill looked in the glass and said that he had an awful face after all
  • Bill and Jake are glad that Robert Cohn isn't going trout-fishing with them in the Irati River, that they're going to get "tight" at lunch on the "wine of the country" and then take a "swell" bus ride to be started at the Cafe Iruna

Book 2 Chapter 11:

  • On a hot day Bill and Jake prepared to go on their bus trip with their wine bottles and Bill and Jake even listened to to a Basque imitate a klaxon motor-horn; Robert Cohn stayed in the arcade to watch them start
  • There was more drinking even before they started on their trip
  • Bill shared a wine bottle with a portion of the bus they were sitting and the peasants going up into the hills wanted Bill and Jake to drink from their leather wine-bottles
  • When the bus finally left, Robert Cohn waved at the bus and the Basques waved back at him
  • Jake noticed the coolness as the bus left town and Jake and Bill were treated to how to drink by Basques
  • After riding for a bit in the hills the bus stopped at a posada where Bill and Jake got drinks and drank with a couple of Basques; the bus started off again
  • The Basque that had been riding on the tin roof now sat between Bill and Jake and an old man leaned across from the other side of the seat and asked in English if Jake and Bill were Americans
  • Jake and the old man talked to each other in which Jake found out that the old man was in America forty years ago and that he came back to get married
  • Jake told the old man they were heading for the fiesta in Pamplona for the bull-fights but for now they were fishing in Burguete to fish; the old man wished them good fishing and didn't talk again as if he were tired from speaking American
  • Jake and Bill finally arrived at Burguete and they viewed the monastery of Roncesvalles and had there rod-case and fishing licenses inspected by the carabineer who said it was okay; Bill noticed it was "awfully cold"
  • Jake and Bill checked into the inn and paid 12 pesetas for room and board and Bill complained about the cold again and said he would not go in a stream if it were this cold the next day
  • Jake said that 12 pesetas was too much because that's what they were paying in a big hotel, but when the keeper of the inn said wine was included Jake said that it was "all right".
  • Bill blew his breath at Jake to show him how cold it was and they both had hot rum punch to get warm; Jake and Bill also listened to the wind
  • Bill said,"It blows like hell up here."
  • Jake added more rum to the punch because there was not enough
  • After eating dinner they went to their beds and smoked, read and kept warm in their beds; Jake said it felt good to be warm and in bed

Book 2 Chapter 12:

  • Jake gets up in the morning when it was cool outside and he filled two tobacco-tins with worms using "a sort of mattock"
  • The woman of the inn was downstairs when he returned from gathering worms and he asked for coffee and lunch
  • Bill watched Jake collecting the worms outside and it was an effort for Jake to get Bill up out of bed until Jake mentioned food
  • Jake got the equipment they needed for fishing ready and Bill asked Jake if he was going to show "a little pity and irony"
  • Bill sang of "pity and irony" on the way downstairs and asked Jake to be "ironical" about the way he asked for jam and about Primo de Rivera
  • When Bill asked Jake to "say something pitiful", Jake said "Robert Cohn" and also said it was too early to be talking about why Robert Cohn was pitiful
  • Bill called Jake an "expatriated newspaper man" instead of a "writer" and said that Jake should be "ironical" when he gets out of bed with a mouthful of pity.
  • Jake thought that Bill might have hurt Jake by cracking about his impotency
  • Bill said Jake was a "good guy" but he could never say he was a "good guy" in New York because that would make him gay
  • Bill and Jake gathered their lunch, two bottles of wine in a rucksack and the equipment for their day and started off for their day of fishing
  • Along the way, Bill said,"This is country."
  • They walked until they saw "the steep bluffs, dark with trees and jutting with grey stone, that marked the course of the Irati River." From this point to the Irati River and back was "a hell of a hike".
  • Bill and Jake finally got to the river and Bill did some fly fishing using McGintys while Jake fished at the dam
  • Jake hid two bottles of wine under a pipe spouting out some water from a spring
  • Jake caught several trout and layered them in the bag and put it in the shade of the tree
  • Jake read a book by A. E. W. Mason while waiting for Bill by the hot dam for lunch
  • When Bill arrived, they compared catches and Bill had 4 big trout and Jake got six using worms, all about the size of Bill's smallest trout
  • They had wine, eggs and chicken along with the wine that was cooling in the stream for lunch
  • Jake tells Bill that Bryan is dead and Jake tells Bill that he reversed the order for the Great Commoner; Jake:"First the Chicken, then the egg"
  • Jake wonders what day God created the chicken and Bill says to "rejoice and believe and give thanks" for "our stay on Earth is not for long."
  • Jake and Bill "utilized" their meal
  • Bill talked to Jake about Bryan and going to school with him and Mencken
  • Bill and Jake said that they both went to Loyola with Bishop Manning and Jake said Bill was "cock-eyed" on wine for saying so
  • When Jake said that they only had the two bottles, Bill said that he was in pay of the "Anti-Saloon League"
  • They both debated on who went to school with Wayne B. Wheeler
  • Bill and Jake agreed to take a nap but neither did and instead Bill asked Jake about his business with Brett
  • Jake to Bill that he was in love with her "off and on for a hell of a long time"
  • Bill apologized and Jake said he didn't want to talk about it anymore
  • Bill said he was going to sleep and put a newspaper over his head while asking Jake if he was really a Catholic
  • Jake said that he was "technically" a Catholic but didn't know what that meant
  • They both went to sleep and when Jake woke up it was late afternoon; Bill was packing the rucksack
  • Bill said that he dreamt but Jake said that he didn't think he dreamt
  • Bill said that Jake ought to dream because "all our biggest business men have been dreamers"
  • They gathered the equipment including the worms and walked back to a dark town and then returned to the inn
  • Bill and Jake stayed five days at Burguete and had good fishing where the nights were cool and the days were hot with breezes
  • They also played 3 handed bridge and fished twice at the Irati River with an Englishman named Harris who "walked over from Saint Jean Pied de Port"
  • There was no word from Robert Cohn, Brett or Mike

Book 2 Chapter 13:

  • Harris the Englishman gives Jake a letter from Michael Campbell to him at breakfast that reads that Michael and Brett would meet Bill and Jake in Pamplona on Wednesday which was the day Jake was reading this letter
  • After breakfast, Jake gets a telegram from a girl that is addressed to "Barnes, Burguete" from Robert Cohn that says "Vengo Jueves Cohn" which means "I come Thursday"; this frustrates Jake a bit
  • Jake and Bill respond by telegraph with a messages that said "Arriving to-night." which they thought was enough
  • Jake and Bill went back to the inn, picked up Harris and then visited Roncesvalles which Bill and Harris agreed was worth the trip but not like fishing
  • After going to the monastery, the three of them went to a pub across the street and had a bottle of wine each which Harris said he would pay for but the innkeeper would not take Harris' money
  • The three of them drank ("utilized") another bottle of wine which Bill paid for and a final round of appreciation took place; they also found out that Harris' real name was "Wilson-Harris"
  • After lunch, Harris gave his information in London and gave Bill and Jake each an envelope of flies which he tied himself as reminder of their good times fishing
  • Bill and Jake talked about how "nice" Harris was but Jake thought it would be best that he stay there and fish since one "couldn't tell how English would mix"
  • Bill and Jake arrived into Pamplona in the late afternoon in front of the Hotel Montoya and met Montoya after a customs inspection
  • Bill and Jake learned that Robert Cohn, Michael Campbell and Lady Ashley arrived the day before, that they were at the pelota and that Jake's and Bill's rooms were ready
  • Montoya said that the bulls would arrive that night, starting at 7 with the "Villar" bulls and the "Miuras" the following day
  • Montoya insisted that Jake was an aficionado and that Jake insisted Bill was an aficionado; Montoya said though that Bill was not an aficionado like Jake was
  • All good bull-fighters stayed at Montoya's hotel and in Montoya's room he had pictures of them dedicated to "Juanito Montoya" or his sister
  • Those pictures of bull-fighters without aficion went into his desk drawer which were thrown away and those with aficion were framed
  • Montoya introduced Jake to some aficionados who found Jake amusing because Jake was American but it was found that he was an aficionado and they had to touch him to make sure it was "certain"
  • Jake said that Montoya could forgive anything of a bull-fighter with aficion and he once forgave Jake of his friends
  • When Jake got back to the room, he talked about the unloading of the bulls with Bill and Jake said that the bulls were unloaded one at time
  • During unloading, Jake said that the steerers were there to make sure that the bulls did not break their horns on the stone walls or "gore each other"
  • Jake and Bill left the Hotel and then went towards the cafe' Iruna and in the square there were two ticket-houses which would sell tickets "the day before the fiesta"
  • Jake and Bill met Michael, Brett and Robert Cohn at the cafe' Iruna; Brett:"Hello, you chaps!"
  • Robert Cohn talked about how he brought Mike and Brett down
  • Mike asked about fishing
  • Bill talked about how he met a war veteran and told everyone his name was Harris which led into a discussion about Mike's participation in the war mostly pressed on by Brett
  • Mike talked about his medals, how he asked his tailor to medals on his uniform for dinner in which the Prince of Wales was supposed to come
  • Someone shot Henry Wilson that night so the Prince of Wales never did and so Mike's medals just ended up in his pocket; Mike thought he didn't tell the story right
  • Mike ended up giving away all of his medals away as souvenirs in a night club
  • Mike sent hundreds of pounds a year to keep his tailor quiet about wanting the medals back until Mike became bankrupt which came "gradually and then suddenly" and from the existence of "false friends" and "creditors"; this led to some bitter letters from Mike's tailor
  • Mike did not want to talk about this "gloomy" subject any more so the lot of them went to see the bulls unloaded
  • As they walked through town, Jake starting walking with Brett and then Robert Cohn joined up on the other side; the route they took to see the bulls was busy
  • As Brett was walking by a wine-shop that sold cheap wine, she even said that's where they would by wine when funds ran low, a woman called three girls to watch Brett
  • They eventually reached the gate of the corrals and gave their tickets so they could go in and watch the bulls, each traveling-box was marked by name and brand of the bull-breeder had one bull in it which came by train from Castile
  • They watched bulls released into the corral and Brett thought that the first bull released was beautiful
  • Jake said that the first bull knew how to use his horns like a "boxer"
  • When the second bull was released, the bull "bull drove" into one of the steers and even though Jake told Brett not to look, she looked with fascination and said she saw the bull use his horns from left to right
  • When all of the bulls were unloaded, they all made a herd except for the one steer that was injured in the beginning
  • Jake, Robert and Brett got a carriage and went to the cafe', Bill and Mike joined them 30 minutes later after having drinks
  • Robert Cohn asked if the last ones unloaded would fight as well as the first ones because they quieted very quickly
  • Jake replied by saying that they knew each other and that they were only "dangerous" as one or two or three of them were together
  • Brett thought the business of bulls was extraordinary
  • Bill thought that all of the bulls looked "dangerous" to him and Jake said that "they only want to kill when they're alone"
  • Mike commented on how "fine" the bulls were and especially the one that hit the steer
  • Mike also said that Robert Cohn would make a good steer because he lived a quiet life and didn't say much even though Robert Cohn said that it would be "no life being a steer"; Bill laughed at this
  • Mike said to Robert Cohn that Mike wanted to hear more from Robert Cohn, something funny to show that he was having a good time
  • Brett said that Mike was drunk and Mike asked Robert Cohn if he was going to follow Brett around like a steer
  • Brett told Mike to shut up and show some "breeding" and Mike said that bulls were the only ones with any breeding
  • Mike said that Brett slept with other people better than Robert Cohn and then Robert Cohn told Mike to shut up as Robert Cohn stood up
  • Mike told Robert Cohn to not act like he was going to hit Mike because it didn't make a difference to him and Mike asked Robert why he followed Brett like a steer which in Mike's eyes was wrong
  • Mike asked Robert Cohn if he knew that he was not wanted
  • Mike asks Robert Cohn why he never gets drunk and tells him that the reason why he didn't have a good time in San Sebastian was because none of Mike's and Brett's friends invited him to any parties; Mike also said that their friends could not be blamed for it
  • Brett was disgusted with Mike's behavior towards Robert Cohn but she said that she was not saying that Robert Cohn was right either
  • Mike didn't like how Robert Cohn "hung around" Brett in San Sebastian which made him "damned well sick" and Brett agreed that Robert Cohn "behaved badly"
  • Mike said that Brett gave Robert Cohn's letters to him to read but he refused and Brett thought it was noble
  • Mike said that he couldn't read any letters, including Brett's
  • Brett told Mike to behave and that he would tell Robert Cohn to behave also
  • Mike told Jake to tell Robert Cohn to behave or "get out" and Jake agreed it would be "nice"
  • Mike said that Robert Cohn called Brett "Circe" because she turns men into swine
  • Jake suggested that they eat and for Mike to act like nothing happened and if Robert Cohn asked anything to say that Mike was "tight"
  • Brett wanted to bathe before dinner
  • They went back to the hotel and Jake spoke with Montoya about the bulls where Jake said the bulls were "nice bulls" and Montoya said "they're not too good" because Montoya thought they didn't "feel" too good; Montoya and Jake both thought the bulls were "all right"
  • Bill and Robert Cohn were in there rooms and Jake joined Bill on his balcony and Bill said Mike had no right to talk like that to Robert Cohn
  • Bill and Jake talked about how the bulls were brought out and to not let Mike get too "tight"
  • The next day was the Miuras and the day after that the fiesta would start
  • Jake and Bill got clean up for supper
  • Supper was a "pleasant meal" and Brett looked lovely, Robert enjoyed the fact that she had been with him, and Mike and Brett were funny and "they were good together"
  • Dinner to Jake was like those remembered from the war with happenings that could not be prevented, "ignored tension" and much wine
  • Jake was happy and it appeared to him that they were all "nice" people

Book 2 Chapter 14:

  • As Jake went to bed and read a book for a while and enough only to let the sensation of the room going around when he closed his eyes pass, he heard Brett and Robert Cohn going to their own rooms; Jake "was very drunk"
  • Jake could not sleep because he was not able to think about things differently in the dark than he did in the light
  • Jake slept with the light on for six months, which he thought was a bright idea
  • Jake said to hell with women and to hell with Lady Ashley
  • Jake thought that women made "awfully swell" friends and that one had to be in love with a woman to have a basis of friendship
  • Jake had been having a Brett for a friend and he thought he was getting something for nothing, but he thought to himself that "the bill" always comes
  • Jake thought that he had paid for everything "that was any good" so he had a "good time" and the world was a good place to buy in
  • In time Jake would think that this philosophy would be as silly as the others that he had
  • He learned what it was all about by finding out "how to live in it"
  • Jake liked to see Mike hurt Robert Cohn and it made him feel disgusted at himself after at himself which he thought was "immorality"
  • Jake thought that Bill and Brett were good drunks, Robert Cohn was never drunk, and Mike was a bad drunk and Mike was "unpleasant" after a certain point
  • Jake thought that English spoken language of the upper classes must have fewer words than the Eskimo/Cherokee even though he did not know Eskimo/Cherokee and it might have been a fine language
  • One phrase to mean everything, the English talked in inflected phrases and Jake approved the way Harris the Englishman spoke although he was not "upper class"
  • Jake began to read again, this time he read "Turgenieff" and with the brandy that he drank he would remember what he read "somewhere" and it would appear to be real;Jake:"That was another good thing you paid for and then had."
  • There were no more rows and the next two days in Pamplona were "quiet"
  • Jake observed the town's preparations for the fiesta
  • Jake observed peasants come in to the market and leave the town with their things that they brought into town on "tall gray motor-buses"
  • In the evening was the paseo, one hour after dinner everyone participated
  • Jake thought it was a quiet life where no one was drunk
  • Jake went with Brett to church and Brett asked to hear Jake at confession but Jake said it was impossible, uninteresting and in a language she didn't know
  • Robert Cohn followed Jake and Brett to church, Robert was "pleasant and nice" and the Jake, Brett and Robert Cohn went to a Gypsy camp and Brett had her fortune told
  • Jake said that they all felt "healthy" and the scenery was beautiful
  • Jake felt friendly towards Robert Cohn
  • On the day before the fiesta, they couldn't be upset on a day like that Jake thought

Book 2 Chapter 15:

  • On July 6, the fiesta "exploded" and peasants at first spent their money at wine-shops because they cared about getting their money's worth, but later in the fiesta it would not matter where they shopped and how much things costed
  • There were many people at the 11o'clock mass because San Fermin is also a religious festival
  • Jake met with Bill and Robert Cohn at the cafe before noon and Jake drank Sherry
  • A rocket burst above the Theatre Gayarre signifying the start of the fiesta and many people were in the arcade and in the square
  • Pipes, fifes and drums signaled riau riau being played and there were dancers open the fiesta
  • Children followed a man with a reed-pipe and bill said that he must have been the village idiot
  • A group of dancers, all men, were dressed in blue smocks and held a banner that read "Hurray for wine! Hurray for the foreigners"
  • Robert asked where the foreigners were and Bill said that Bill and Robert were the foreigners
  • The fiesta went on for seven days and there was non-stop drinking, dancing and loud noise where you had to shout to get a "remark" out
  • In the afternoon there was a "big religious procession" where San Fermin was translated from one church to another and which included riau-riau dancers, "great giants"
  • They started into the church but Brett was stopped because she had no hat
  • They went into town and Bill and Jake were put into a circle to dance and people were chanting
  • Brett wanted to dance too but the people in the town wouldn't let her because they wanted her to be an "image" to dance around
  • The dance ended with a "riau-riau" and then they were rushed into a wine-shop where they stood except for Brett who sat on a wine-cask while men sang
  • Jake tried to pay for the wine from the casks but one of the men would not let him pay for it
  • The dancers did not want Jake to leave to get leather wine-bottles, three were teaching Brett how to drink from a wine-skin and someone was teaching Bill a song
  • Jake finally convinced the dancers that he would be back and he bought 2 wine-skins (1 rather large) for eight pesetas which apparently was cheap
  • Jake got back to the wine-shop, had his new wine-skins filled and also found out that Brett and Bill were in a back room
  • A man bought Jake a drink and in return Jake let the man have "a rinse of the mouth" from the new wine-bag
  • Brett and Bill were on barrels surrounded by dancers, Mike was eating Tuna, chopped onions and vinegar with several men who were also drinking and mopping up the vinegar and oil with bread
  • Mike introduced Jake to the men at the table and someone went to get Jake a fork
  • Brett told Jake not to eat their dinner but a man said to eat because that's what the food was there for
  • The procession passed by, the music could be heard above the singing and everyone drank from big wine-bottle that Jake got
  • Jake wondered where Robert Cohn was and Bill said that he was dead, Brett said that Robert Cohn was put somewhere because he passed out
  • Jake ,with Mike's interpretation to a Anis del Mono man, found Robert Cohn sleeping on some wine-casks in a back room with a big wreath of twisted garlics on his chest and they let him sleep
  • Two hours later, Robert Cohn appeared and Robert Cohn said that he must have been sleeping and Bill said that he had been dead
  • They wanted to eat and Brett wanted to take a bath
  • Mike mentioned how much everyone drank except for Robert Cohn for he was saying that Robert Cohn had slept instead
  • Sky rockets were going up in the air and the square was full of people and the people in the center were dancing
  • They had a "big meal" at the hotel that was double the price as normal and with more choices
  • Instead of staying up all night so he could see the bulls at 6am, Jake went to sleep at 4am on one of the beds in Robert Cohn's room because Jake had lost his key; everyone else stayed up
  • Jake slept until the rocket went off signifying the release of the bulls and he watched men running and then bulls "running together"
  • Another rocket went off to signify that all the bulls made to the bull-ring and Jake thought about that the rest of the group must have been at the bull-ring and went back to bed to sleep
  • When Robert Cohn came back to the room, he woke up Jake and Jake asked Robert Cohn if he "saw the show"
  • Robert Cohn said that they were all there and after Jake asked if anyone got hurt, Robert Cohn said that six or eight people got hurt thanks to a bull getting in the crowd
  • Jake wished he was up and asked where they stayed up and Robert Cohn said at a club
  • Jake said he watched the bulls go through from the balcony
  • They went to lunch and then to the cafe' Iruna where things seemed more crowded that there was a hum at the cafe' that didn't exist until now and that they were "part of it"
  • Bill told Robert Cohn how to watch the horses so he wouldn't mind them, but Robert Cohn told Bill that he wasn't worried about standing it as much as he was about becoming bored
  • Jake told Brett how to watch the horses and Brett was worried about getting through it; Mike said he'd take care of her
  • Jake went back to the hotel to get a wine-skin and glasses (binoculars) and Bill went with him
  • Bill was irritated with Robert Cohn and his "Jewish Superiority" because Robert Cohn thought that the only emotion that he would get was boredom
  • Jake said that Bill and Jake would watch Robert Cohn through the glasses
  • At the hotel, Jake and Bill met Montoya who suggested that they meet Pedro Romero who was in room eight getting dressed for the bull-fight
  • Pedro Romero was "the best looking boy" that Jake had ever seen and seemed dignified to Jake
  • Pedro Romero acknowledged that Jake was going to the bull-fight
  • Jake and Montoya said to each other how much they liked the boy, Pedro Romero and Montoya said he looked like a "torero" but to see how he does in the ring
  • After getting the field-glasses and the wine-bottle, Bill and Jake sat near Montoya.
  • Jake and Montoya agreed that Pedro Romero was the real thing by Montoya nodding his head
  • Jake and Bill looked through the field-glasses and found that Brett, Robert Cohn and Mike were all right
  • After the fight, they moved with the crowd, music and dancers until they reached the cafe' where they drank and watched the crown and dancers
  • Bill asked what kind of dancing it was and Jake said it was a sort of jota which bill liked
  • Mike and Brett were impressed by Pedro Romero and Brett especially liked his green pants
  • Mike called Brett and "extraordinary wench" because she couldn't keep her eyes off of the horses no matter what happened to the horses
  • Mike said that Robert Cohn was quite green and Robert Cohn said that he was bothered by the first horse
  • Bill asked Robert Cohn if he was bored and Robert Cohn agreed that he was not bored
  • Robert Cohn called Brett a sadist but Mike said that she was just a "healthy wench" with a "healthy stomach"
  • They talked about how much of a fine spectacle it was to watch a bull-fight
  • Brett talked about sitting lower and Mike said it was because she wanted to sit closer to the bull-fighters
  • Brett and Jake talked about how much they liked Pedro Romero as a bull-fighter
  • Of the three bull-fighters, Romero was the best and Jake explained to Brett why she liked Romero's cape-work over the others
  • Jake told Brett that Romero never made any contortions and had a "purity of line" which gave "real emotion"
  • Romero never had to emphasize the closeness of the bulls
  • Mike, Brett and Jake complemented Pedro Romero's bull-fighting skills and then jokingly put him down so that Brett would not fall in love with the bull-fighter; Mike:"Drunk all day and spend all their time beating their poor old mothers."
  • They hitched the mules to the bull and they pulled the bull out the red gate and "swept a swath smoothly across the sand"
  • Jake said that this would be the last one but Brett said "Not really."
  • Again close in with the crowd, Brett noticed how much a bull-fight could tire someone, but Mike said that she would get a drink implying that she would be fine after a drink
  • Pedro Romero did not fight the next day
  • "It was Miura bulls, and a very bad bull-fight"
  • The next day after that there was no bull-fight, but the fiesta continued "all day and all night"

Book 2 Chapter 16:

  • It rained but the fiesta kept on under covers
  • People "crowded" under the covered seats of the bull-ring to watch Basque and Navarrais dancers and singers
  • Afterward, the Val Carlos dancers in their costumes danced down the street in the rain with costumes, drums, and band chief's horses getting wet
  • The crowd and dancers stayed in cafe's for shelter
  • While shaving for dinner, Jake was interrupted by Montoya and they talked about no bulls that day because of the rain
  • Montoya asked Jake where Jake's friends were and Jake said they were at the Iruna
  • Montoya asked if Jake knew the American Ambassador and he said that everybody did and that he knew that he was in town to Montoya
  • Montoya asked embarrassingly that they were at the Grand Hotel and that they wanted Pedro Romero and Marcial Lalanda to join them for coffee that night after dinner; Jake:"it can't hurt Marcial any"
  • Montoya said that Marcial had been in San Sebastian all day and that he drove in a car with Marquez that morning; he didn't think they would be back that night
  • Jake told Montoya not to give the message for after dinner coffee to Pedro Romero
  • Montoya wanted to ask Jake if he should give the message to Pedro Romero because Jake was American and Jake said that he would do just that and not give Pedro Romero the message
  • Montoya did not want the boy to be take advantage and Jake tells him that it's easy to not expose Pedro Romero to such people by not giving Pedro Romero the message
  • Montoya tells Jake that Pedro Romero is such a "fine boy" and that he should stay "with his own people";Montoya:"He shouldn't mix in that stuff."
  • After going outside to walk around the square and through the arcades in the rain, Jake looked for them in the cafe' Iruna but eventually found them in the downstairs dining room of the hotel
  • Jake did not eat nor drink with them as he was well behind
  • Bill, as a joke, bought Mike 12 shoe shines from many bootblacks bootblacks;Mike:"Bill's a yell of laughter."
  • As Jake was a "little uncomfortable" about the shoe shining activity, he looked around and eventually was invited by Pedro Romero to meet Pedro Romero's friend who was a bull-fight critic from Madrid and Jake told Pedro Romero how much he "liked his work"
  • The critic asked Jake about words that he was not sure of such as the English translation for Corrida de toros which meant "running of the bulls" and the fact that there was no Spanish word for bull-fight
  • Pedro Romero was born in Ronda and he learned English in Gibraltar; Ronda was not far from Gibraltar
  • Pedro Romero was only in bull-fighting for three years and started bull-fighting in Malaga
  • Jake mentioned to Pedro Romero that he saw him in the bull-ring three times but Jake only saw him twice but did not want to explain the mistake
  • Jake lied about seeing Pedro Romero in Madrid because Pedro Romero had asked at what other time did Jake see him
  • In an unconceited way, Pedro Romero told the critic that he would show him his work if the bull was good
  • Pedro Romero told Jake that the critic did not like Pedro's work
  • The critic explained that he did like Pedro Romero's work but that it was incomplete
  • Pedro said to the critic to wait for a good bull the next day and then he will show him good work
  • The critic asked Jake if he saw the bulls for the next day and Jake said that he saw them being unloaded
  • Pedro asked Jake what he thought of the bulls and he said that the bulls were "very nice" with very short horns and about "twenty-six arrobas"
  • The critic said that they wouldn't way 26 arrobas and Pedro Romero agreed
  • The critic said that the bulls had bananas for horns but Pedro Romero and Jake disagreed with the critic
  • When Brett said that Jake had deserted them, Jake said that he was talking "bulls"
  • After Jake said that Mike was drunk to Pedro Romero and after Brett said something about introducing his friends to Pedro Romero and the bull-fight critic, Jake invited them for coffee
  • They all sat at a big table and Jake introduced them "all around" and Mike ordered Fundador and glasses;"drunken talking" followed
  • Bill told Jake to tell Pedro Romero that he was "ashamed" of being a writer
  • Pedro Romero sat next to Brett listening to her and Jake introduced Bill and Robert Cohn as writers
  • Pedro Romero was impressed by the writers and how Bill looked like Villalta
  • Pedro Romero referred to Mike as "the drunken one" and when he asked Jake what Mike did he said that he did nothing; Pedro said that's why Mike drank
  • Mike was drunk and he told Jake to tell Pedro Romero that "bulls have no balls" and that Brett wanted to see him in his green pants
  • Pedro Romero talked to Brett in Spanish and "a little English" while Brett spoke in French

  • There were probably bitter people in the back room of the Bar Milano from Cannes that "had known" Mike

  • The man who died was named Vicente Girones and his wife and two children came down; there was a service in the chapel of San Fermin, a procession that included dancers and drinkers and then the body was taken by train back to Vicente's home town of Tafalla
  • The bull who killed the man was Bocanegra who was then killed by Pedro Romero
  • Pedro Romero was given the cut bull's ear from Bocanegra and in turn he gave the ear to Brett who kept the ear in the drawer of her bed-table in the Hotel Montoya in Pamplona
  • Jake estimated that he must have went to bed at 3:30 and was awakened by band music at 6:00

  • Pedro Romero said that he would kill Robert Cohn if he helped him up onto the bed, but that he would kill him anyway if he wasn't gone in the morning
  • Mike emphasized that Robert Cohn wanted to shake Pedro Romero's hand, Brett wouldn't let it happen and then Pedro Romero hit him in the face again
  • Mike said that Brett liked taking care of people and that she was taking care of Romero
  • Mike said that the fact she liked taking care of people was the reason why she found Mike this morning
  • Mike drank lots of beer during this whole story
  • Brett said that she had a hell of a happy life with the "British aristocracy!"
  • Mike mentioned that the person that Brett got her title from was a sailor of the Ninth baronet and would always make Brett sleep on the floor because he wouldn't sleep on a bed

  • Mike said that Brett didn't have an "absolutely happy life" and it was too bad because "she enjoys things so."
  • Mike said that he was going to get plenty of sleep because they got way too little sleep during these fiestas, went to his room and ordered beer and Fundador from the chambermaid

Book 2 Chapter 18:

  • This was the last day of the fiesta and there were many people coming for the bull-fight including ones riding motor-cars from San Sebastian and Biarritz

  • Brett said that Pedro Romero was hurt badly by Robert Cohn and that he would not leave the room
  • Pedro Romero was still going to fight and Brett wanted to go the bull-fight with Jake
  • Having not listened to Brett, Mike made fun of Brett and her relationships with Pedro Romero and Robert Cohn
  • Brett wanted to leave with Jake and leave Mike to himself and his insults
  • Brett told Mike that Pedro Romero was "damned well" and to watch him that afternoon
  • Brett said that Pedro Romero's people were mad about her and that she would not see him until after lunch at the fight
  • Brett told Jake that she would eat lunch with Pedro Romero
  • Brett looked "radiant" and she walked with Jake to a cross-street that led to the Paseo de Sarasate but Brett did not want to go there and get stares yet
  • Brett wanted the wind to go down so it would be better for Pedro Romero
  • Brett and Jake went to San Fermin's to pray but Brett got nervous and Jake and Brett left
  • Brett said that she was not worried about Pedro Romero and that she felt happy about him
  • Brett said that prayer was helpful for some people and not others
  • Jake said that praying helped him and Brett said that praying never did her any good
  • Jake said he was "pretty religious"
  • Jake and Brett went back to the hotel and she was happy and carefree
  • The German maitre d'hotel was there to greet them and Brett said to save a table for three, but the maitre d'hotel said that it probably would be better for a table of 2
  • It was then that Brett knew Mike must not have been good when he got back to the hotel and where she said that she was not going to dine at the hotel
  • Jake said that he would see Brett at the cafe' and Brett and Jake passed Montoya and he bowed but did not smile
  • Brett thanked Jake for the walk
  • Brett went to Pedro Romero's room and walked into it without knocking
  • Jake went to Mike's room and found the room and Mike in disarray still talking about Brett getting a bull-fighter and Robert Cohn going away
  • Jake and Bill went to eat but not where the snotty German was
  • Jake and Bill went to a restaurant on a side street off of the square were only men were eating, smoking and singing; food was good
  • Jake and Bill went to meet Brett at the Cafe' and she said Mike was asleep
  • When the crowd made its way to the bull-ring, Jake, Bill and Brett made their way with it

  • Brett was "absorbed" by the operations of the bull-fight which included preparations by the sword-handlers and bull-ring servants
  • Brett wondered about the muletas and how one doesn't mind the blood
  • Brett and Jake took turns looking through the "glasses" and they watched the three matadors (Romero, Belmonte, and Marcial) and the President through them
  • Romero handed up his gold-brocaded cape up to Brett and Jake told Brett to spread it in front of her
  • A man sitting next to Jake said for Brett to not spread it but to keep it in her lap, which she did
  • Bill, Brett and Jake noticed how badly Pedro Romero was and Brett said that he should be in bed
  • Belmonte was the first to fight and people expected much from him because he was paid well and people waited all night to buy tickets to see him
  • Belmonte was know to enter the "terrain of the bull" which was dangerous and gave the "sensation of coming tragedy"
  • Belmonte "imposed" conditions such as smaller bulls and bulls with smaller horns which took away from the "sensation of coming tragedy" so people sneered and insulted him
  • When Belmonte had addressed the President, he then had his sword wiped, leaned on the barrera, took in some water, took his cape and went back into the ring
  • The public was for Pedro Romero and he was applauded from the barrera to the bull
  • Belmonte came to compete Marcial
  • Romero was considered smooth, calm and beautiful, something onle Belmonte could only do "sometimes"
  • Belmonte no longer had "the greatness" and Pedro Romero had "the greatness"
  • Jake thought that Pedro Romero loved bulls and Brett
  • Pedro Romero was out that afternoon to be matador to strengthen himself but he also did it for Brett thought Jake
  • The three matadors took turns after the bull charged at the picador.
  • The picador thrust the steel point of the hickory shaft into the shoulder of the bull after Romero caught its attention with his colored cape and made the bull "bleed" for Belmonte
  • The bull did not want to charge the horse so Pedro Romero took him out with his cape softly and smoothly
  • He made four "veronicas" and a half "veronica" to almost lull the bull to sleep to the cheers of the audience
  • Pedro Romero was perfect with his own bulls and with one of the bulls he could see how its seeing was impaired so he only was able to do perfect bull-fighting and not brilliant bull-fighting
  • The crowd wanted this bull that had problems seeing changed because nothing "fine" could happen with such a bull, but the President would not change the bull
  • Brett found out that they didn't change out the bull because the bull had already been paid for and "they" didn't want to lose their money; Brett thought it was unfair to Pedro Romero
  • Brett and Biarritz crowd didn't like to see Pedro Romero fight this bull that had problems with its vision because it made Pedro Romero look afraid of the bull
  • Pedro Romero had to move in so close with this bull because the bull had to see his body and then Pedro Romero had to shift the bull's charge from his body to the "flannel"
  • The crowd preferred Belmonte's imitation of his former self or Marcial's imitation of Belmonte to Pedro Romero's odd side stepping method
  • Pedro Romero kills the bull, acknowledges the President, and the sword handler calls the bull a "bad one"
  • When Pedro Romero went against a "big bull", one with horns and one that recharged "easily and surely", that's what he wanted in a bull
  • The crowd didn't want Pedro Romero to stop with his smooth, slow movements with no "tricks or mystifications"
  • Pedro Romero killed this bull as he had wanted, not as he had been forced to with the other "bad" bull
  • People in the crowd and the President waved their handkerchiefs

  • Bill wanted an absinthe from the cafe'
  • It was the last day of the fiesta, people were in the square, fireworks were readied, boys watched, a crowd gathered outside the cafe' and there was music and dancing
  • Bill and Jake drank absinthe which made the fiesta seem better and they both did not know where Edna was
  • Bill was sorry that Robert Cohn had an "awful time" while Jake didn't really care although he did say that Robert Cohn probably went back to Paris to get back together with his girl named Frances
  • Jake and Bill both enjoyed the fiesta and Bill called it a "wonderful nightmare"
  • Jake felt like "hell" and he drank more throughout the night but did not feel any better
  • Jake went back to hotel to find Mike in Brett's room and Mike said that Brett had gone off with Pedro Romero
  • Mike said that she should not have gone off with Pedro Romero and that Brett had wanted to say good-bye to Jake before she left on the 7o'clock train
  • Jake said "no" as to agree with Mike that Brett should not have gone with Pedro Romero
  • Mike and Jake both agreed that they were both "blind"
  • Jake heard the fiesta going on and went to lie on his bed which did not mean anything to him
  • Bill and Mike came to get him for a meal but Jake pretended to sleep
  • Jake watched dancing in the square, got cleaned up, felt better and then joined Mike and Bill for a meal and it "seemed as if six people were missing"

Book 3 Chapter 19:

  • Jake and Bill decided to get a car and the three of them would go to Bayonne where Bill would buy a ticket
  • After lunch they paid the bill but Montoya did not come near them
  • They left Pamplona and Jake and Mike drank Fundador of which Jake only took a couple of drinks
  • They arrived at Bayonne and bought Bill's ticket to Paris while leaving his luggage at the station
  • The three of them drove to Biarritz and drank at a very Ritz place and played poker dice
  • When it came time to pay for the bill, Mike could not pay for it and had only twenty francs
  • Mike said he could live on a "tick" at the pub in St. Jean
  • Bill asked about the car and Mike said it didn't matter if he kept it or not; Mike:"Seems sort of idiotic."
  • Mike talked about Brett's money and how she didn't have any because she gave it all to Mike to pay off Montoya
  • The three of them drove along the coast among which they drove through Saint Jean de Luz and then it was time for Bill to go back
  • They dropped off Mike at his hotel and Mike said to Jake and Bill that it was a "damned fine fiesta"
  • He called Jake and Bill "damned nice"

  • Bill and Jake arrived in Bayonne just in time for Bill's train and Jake saw him off at the gates to the inner tracks
  • Jake asked the driver of the car to take him to the Hotel Panier Fleuri where he paid the driver two hundred pesetas plus tip
  • Jake rubbed the rod-case through the dust that the car was powdered with as a final connection with Spain and the fiesta
  • Jake stayed in the same room that Bill, Robert Cohn and Jake stayed while in Bayonne which seemed a long time ago
  • Jake washed then went out into town where he felt "strange" to be in France again because it felt "safe" and "suburban
  • Jake wished he had gone to Paris with Bill but that meant that he would be doing more "fiesta-ing"
  • Jake knew it would be quiet in San Sebastian because the season didn't open there until August
  • Jake would use the "fine beach" in San Sebastian and there were trees along the promenade of the beach
  • Jake would go to the Cafe' Marinas and listen to music
  • Jake ate and drank in the restaurant inside the Cafe' Marinas and he found it "pleasant" to drink alone
  • Jake found it nice to be in a country where it was easy to make someone happy as he did the waiter by just overtipping; Jake was glad to be back in France
  • Jake tipped everyone in the hotel to buy some loyalty there but did not tip the porter at the station because he didn't think he would see him again; Jake wanted some loyal people if he should ever return
  • Jake took the train bound for San Sebastian and at Irun he had to show his passport to return to Spain
  • Jake felt like a fool for returning back to Spain because one could not tell about anything there but life in France was "simple"
  • Jake enjoyed the look and feel of San Sebastian and he went to a hotel to a room with a balcony; he had stayed at that hotel before
  • Jake unpacked and cleaned-up in his hotel room and gained an hour in time in San Sebastian
  • Jake filled out a police bulletin, wrote the Hotel Montoya to forward mail and telegrams to his address at the hotel, "calculated" how many days he would be in San Sebastian and told the office to hold mail and forward telegrams to him at San Sebastian and then he ate at the dining-room

  • Jake got dressed, went to the hotel, in an easy chair read sporting magazines to catch up on French sporting life and then received a telegram forwarded from Paris from Brett that said she wanted him to come down to Hotel Montana Madrid because she was in trouble
  • Jake opened another telegram that was forwarded from Pamplona which read the same as the other telegram from Paris that he just received
  • Jake made arrangements to go to Madrid on the Sud express and that meant that his stay at San Sebastian was "all shot to hell"
  • Jake sent Brett a telegram that told her that he would arrive on the Sud express the next day in Madrid
  • Jake was thinking about how he sent Brett off with one man, introduced her to the next man she left with and had to bring her back; he signed the telegram "with love" and went to lunch
  • Jake did not sleep much on the Sud express and watched scenery along the way until the train stopped at the Norte station
  • Jake noticed that Madrid was like a country town and took a cab to the Hotel Montana
  • The staff at the hotel was "rigidly selectioned" and so Jake didn't have to worry about his bags being stolen
  • Lady Ashley wanted to see Jake right away in her room
  • When Jake saw her, she was brushing her hair and her room was in disarray in a manner left only by someone who had always been taken care of by servants
  • Jake and Brett kissed and then she told Jake that she sent away Pedro Romero
  • Jake and Brett agreed to not talk about the situation with Pedro Romero but they continued anyway
  • Brett talked about how Pedro Romero was ashamed of her, how they "ragged" about her at the cafe', and how Pedro wanted her to grow out her hair; she scoffed at the suggestion of having long hair and how Pedro Romero said it would make her look "more womanly"
  • Pedro Romero eventually was not ashamed of Brett anymore and tried to give her money which she refused to take
  • Brett didn't want to take Pedro Romero's money
  • She again said that She and Jake should not talk about it anymore, but she continued on again
  • When Pedro Romero asked her to marry him she refused that too especially since she couldn't even marry Mike Campbell
